Each Little Bird that Sings – Deborah Wiles

This is a story about Comfort Snowberger who has a very unusual life.  She lives with her family in a funeral home and has a large crazy family.  This story blends humor with drama because things in her life start going wrong.  She is losing her best friend and having to deal with death in a more personal way.  Although, this book might appeal to girls more, the humor and message would be a great story for anyone.  You will quickly get sucked into Comfort’s life and feel what she does as she struggles to deal with the events happening. It is definitely a G book.  Enjoy.

Pendragon Merchant of Death – D.J. McHale

This is the first in the Pendragon series and is exciting from the first few pages.  It is about a boy named Bobby Pendragon who thinks he is a normal 14 year old boy until he discovers that he is actually a traveler.  A traveler is one who goes from world to world trying to save the civilization from Saint Dane – an evil character.  He travels to Denduron and encounters squigs, battles and Saint Dane himself.  It is a very exciting book that has nonstop action.  Students of all ages would like this book, but I would have to rate it PG.

The City of Ember – Jeanette DuPrau

This is a fantastic book about a civilization that exists entirely underground. They don’t know of anything above ground. In this world, everything is controlled, even your jobs as an adult. The conflict is that the generator that is providing the only light in Ember is slowly failing. The two main characters stumble upon the mystery of their world and it is up to them to save it. It is a very easy read and you will soon get caught up in their adventure. It is a G rated book and would appeal to both girls and boys. There are already two sequels to this book: The People of Sparks and The Prophet of Yonwood.

Under a War Torn Sky-L.M. Elliot

This is a story about a 19 year old boy who is a fighter pilot in World War II. He is helped to safety by members of the French Resistance who are risking everything in their secret fight against Hitler and Germany. This is a fantastic book because it moves quickly and also teaches you about this time period. It is not overly descriptive and is a quick read as well. The characters are memorable and it is touching in some parts. I think this book will appeal to both boys and girls equally and I really recommend it.
