Princess From Another Planet

Are you wondering what book you should read next? Well than this is the book for you. It is all about this girl named Gracie whose mom is convinced that she is a queen of the planet Pannadeau and Gracie is the princess. Gracie thinks her mom is just crazy because she thinks a princess is supposed to live in a palace and not have to wear hand me downs. Gracie wore hand me downs from her cousin Wren.

One day Gracie went to Wren’s birthday party and met Wren’s friend named Ann. Gracie was embarrassed when she found out she was wearing Ann’s sister’s clothes from a garage sale. Aunt Leora (Wren’s mom) did not get along that well with Gracie’s mom. Aunt Leora started talking about a camp that she signed Wren up for. It had pony rides swimming etc. and Wren hated that kind of stuff but Gracie loved it.

Gracie had an idea that she could go to camp and Wren could stay home. So that was what they did. On the other hand Gracie’s mom was scared that people from planet Pannadeau were trying to kidnap her. Gracie didn’t believe that stuff but her brother did. Will she start to believe her mom? Will Wren get caught for not going to camp? You will have to read this book to find out. I would recommend it to more girls than boys.

The Amulet of Samarkland – Johnathan Stroud

This book is the first in the series, The Bartimaeus Trilogy. This book is about a young boy named Nathaniel, who is thrust into a world of magic and sorcery when his parents abandon him. He trains under his master Mr. Underwood, who is very strict. One day at a magician’s party somebody named Simon Lovelace embarrassed him. Nathaniel wants to get revenge by learning magic beyond his age and ability to summon a djinni (a demon) to steal Lovelace’s most prized possession, The Amulet of Samarkand. This is a book in two point of views from Nathaniel’s and his djinni’s point of view. This book would be good for girls and boys, but only if you like fantasy books. I would give this a Snickers candy bar rating because it isn’t that hard to read and it has a lot of good vocabulary in it.

Time Cat – Lloyd Alexander

This book is about a young cat named Gareth. He is no ordinary cat. He can talk. That is not all. He can also go to wherever, whenever. He takes his owner, Jason, on nine fantastic journeys. First, he takes him to Egypt in 2700 B.C. Egyptians LOVE cats. It ends up that Gareth almost gets taken away. Then, he takes him to Rome and Britain in 55 B.C. Then Ireland in 411 B.C. After that, they go to Japan in 998 A.D. Then, they go to Italy in 1468. A little bit later, they go to Peru in 1555. After that, he takes him to The Isle of the Man in 1588. Later on, they go to Germany in 1600. Lastly, they go to America in 1775. I’ll give you a hint about the book. Every adventure something goes wrong. Every wrong thing has Gareth involved. Both girls and boys would like this book, but it is not the most fast paced book.

The Cheetah Girls Book 2 – Deborah Gregory

This book has four books in one. It is books 5-8, so don’t read it if you haven’t read books 1-4. The Cheetah Girls are flying from New York to Los Angeles. They are going to sing in a showcase, and if the judges really like them they get a record deal. Before the show, they go shopping. Galleria Garibaldi (the leader of the Cheetah Girls) sees a dog collar that would look great on Toto. Toto is a poodle and is closer to the family than the ingredients in a cake. When it is their turn to sing, they burst into Wanna-be Stars in the Jiggy Jungle. The only thing is there is no winners or losers. You get a record deal if you are good enough. The Cheetah Girls found out it might take a while before they find out if they are getting a record deal or not. When they fly back to New York, they still know nothing. If they are going to here something about getting a record deal, it will be from Def Duck Records. Galleria, Chanel, and Dorinda are all Cheetah Girls and all go to Fashion Industries High. Aquenette and Angenette go to Performing Arts High. The next day at Fashion Industries High, Dorinda and Chanel are waiting for Galleria to show up. When she finally does, She’s wearing the dog collar she had bought for Toto. Meanwhile, Chanel’s mom is dating Chanel’s teacher. Dorinda has a real sister instead of just foster sisters. When she finally meats her, she is nothing like she imagined. She ends up looking nothing like her! During Thanksgiving, Aqua and Angie go to Houston. They stay with their mom and grandma. The downside is that their uncle has gone missing! The Cheetah Girls perform one last time in the book. This time, they perform in Houston. This book would attract more to girls for sure.

Tuck Everlasting-Natalie Babbitt

In the year 1880, ten-year-old Winnie Foster gets lost in the woods in an attempt to run away from her high-class family. There she meets the Tuck family, Angus Tuck, Mae Tuck, and their two sons Miles and Jesse. The Tucks have a dangerous secret: they drank from a magic spring in the woods and now can’t ever age or die. Frightened, the Tucks kidnap her and take her back to their home. They tell their story to Winnie about what had happened to them and that they decided to isolate themselves from other people. Winnie was the first person to discover them. Living with the Tucks, she enjoys their easygoing way of life, but also forms a crush on seventeen-year-old Jesse, who attempts to persuade Winnie to join them when she becomes his age by drinking from the magic spring. But Angus, Jesse’s dad, tells her that she shouldn’t. Soon, a man in a yellow suit discovers their secret. Mae does something that gets her put in jail but also doesn’t let the man in yellow tell their secret. I have to admit that I was waiting for something more major to happen in the plot line, because nothing that big really does happen. It’s easy to read and would appeal to both boys and girls. I think the book is beautifully written and is still a story that I will never forget.

Kazunomiya; Prisoner of Heaven- Kathryn Lasky

Kazunomiya; Prisoner of Heaven, is about princess Kazunomiya, the half-sister to Japan’s 1858 Emperor. In this confusing book, Kazunomiya tells about royal life in Japan. I kind of think that title “Prisoner of Heaven” does not match. I think people who like history would like this book.

The Series of The Enfortunate Events: The Reptile Room – Lemony Snicket

This is a great book that I would encourage everyone to read. It is about these three children whose parents died in a car crash. The three kids names are Sunny who is the youngest, Klaus who is in the middle, and Violet who is the oldest. If you haven’t read the first book do not read the rest of this. Well it all starts when the three kids move to Montgomery Montgomery’s after living at Count Olaf’s house.  Count Olaf was a relative of theirs who wanted their fortune they got after their parents died in a fire. When they moved to Montgomery’s house he was going on a trip to Peru to do something with reptiles. He couldn’t just leave the kids at his house alone. So he was going to take them along. The orphans called Montgomery Uncle Monty. Uncle Monty also needed an assistant so he hired Stephano. The day that Stephano was going to come Uncle Monty was going somewhere. So the kids had to help him get comfortable. When he came he looked quite familiar. Could it be Cont Olaf or not? You will have to find out by reading this story.

The Secret Identity of Devon Delaney-Lauren Barnholdt

Devon’s mom always told her that karma always comes back to get you, that must be true. Now, Devon’s has got a lot of damage control to do. She told her “summer friend” Lexi not only that she was really popular at her school, but that she was also dating Jared Brentley. Now that Lexi moved to Devon’s town in Connecticut and has to go to Devon’s school, Devon’s in trouble. So she has to find out how to ‘hang’ with the popular crew, and how to pretend that she’s dating Jared in front of Lexi (without Jared knowing, of course.) As she tries to keep up with her “image,” more things go wrong! Her family thinks she’s nuts, her best friend, Melissa, won’t even speak to her, and, to make things worse, Jared starts crushing on Lexi, and Devon starts crushing on Jared’s best friend! All this has Devon really wondering – who is the real Devon anyway? I really enjoyed this priceless and witty story as Devon finds friendship and love. I think this story would appeal a lot more to girls than boys and I really recommend it. It makes you want to laugh-out-loud and maybe even shed a few tears. Here is a link to the author’s website. http://www.laurenbarnholdt.com/ Enjoy!

The Schwa Was Here-Neal Shusterman

Anthony Bonano (nicknamed ‘Antsy’) was just a normal eighth-grader living in Brooklyn. Until he meets Calvin Schwa (nicknamed ‘The Schwa’) who is invisible. Well, not exactly invisible, because you can still see him if you concentrate. But he’s just really, really unnoticeable. I guess you could call him invisible-ish. Everybody has weird stories about why he is the way he is, and what happened to his mother. People started paying The Schwa to do dares that have to do with his “invisiblishness,” and Antsy would be his manager. Things seem to be going okay… until someone dares him to sneak into the scary Old Man Crawley’s apartment and bring back a dog bowl from there. They get caught and have to walk Crawley’s huge dogs for 12 weeks. When Antsy asks The Schwa what happened to his mom, Schwa gets really uncomfortable and just tells Antsy that his mom dissapeared when he was five. When Crawley’s handicapped granddaughter named Lexie comes to town, Crawley asked Antsy to be her personal escort. Even though they realized that Lexie’s grandfather had set them up, Schwa becomes jealous of Antsy and Lexie’s relationship. So he once throws a fit and tells Antsy that he’s tired of being “invisible”and that he doesn’t want to be forgotten and end up like his mother. When he plans something big to get himself noticed, that horribly doesn’t work. But a butcher in a supermarket knew the story about The Schwa’s mother that would change his life forever… The Schwa Was Here by Neal Shusterman is a hilarious story will make you laugh out loud! It would definitely appeal to both boys and girls. It does have some mild language, but it’s not really that bad. It is told in the first person by Antsy and is the absolute kind of offbeat story that I love, and I know that you will love too when you read it.
