Artimes Fowl: The Lost Colony – Eoin Colfer

Going back thousands of years ago, the 8th family of magical beings, demons, were in a war with humans. Though the other fairies gave up, the 8th family did not and instead the warlock demons set a time spell and when the time was right, they would seek revenge on the humans.

But something happened and even if the spell did work, one day it would explode and destroy Hybras, the demons’ island. Everything would disappear and all the demons would travel through time. Some would go to Earth and many will go to space to die, but very few will survive.

In this book, Artimes is involved with one demon warlock, No.1, the very last warlock. No.1 is very different from the others. Unlike them, he does not feel the need to kill something and rip it to parts. He longed for love or at least someone who would understand him. While Artimes was on a mission with his bodyguard, Butler, and his fairy friend, Holly Short, to catch No.1 and send him back, his plan fails. Someone else kidnapped No.1 and it was a little girl with her two big friends. Seemed like she was smart because she kidnapped him flawlessly without a single mistake. Well, now, time is running out and Hybras will soon explode. Plus, No.1 is the only one who could stop it. If demons come to Earth, they will eat all humans and probably start ruling the world.

Maybe they’ll use the humans as slaves instead of eating them. Will Artimes risk his life and leave his family, Butler, and new friends behind, while he saves the world? Well, you’re going to have to read this book to find out! I recommend this book to both, boys and girls, if they like adventure and magical creatures. I hope you enjoy this book! ^-^

The Sea of Monsters- Rick Riordan

Percy Jackson’s life is tough enough, being that he is the son of Poseidon. But, when a bunch of cannibal giants play dodge ball with him, Percy knows that he has to return to Camp Half-Blood. Camp Half-Blood is the only safe place for demigods like Percy. Percy’s life gets worse when he finds out that the magical borders of the camp are poisoned. Furthermore, if a cure isn’t found Camp Half-Blood will be over run by monsters. Percy must go to the Sea of Monsters to find the only cure to the poison, but on his way, Percy will find out a secret about his family, one of betrayal. I really liked this book because of the action, and for the same reason I the book will appeal to boys more so than girls. If you like this book you should read the other books in the series, including The Lightning Thief and The Titan’s Curse.

Because of Winn-Dixie – Kate DiCamillo

Loving, funny, creative, and smart describes the main character, Winn-Dixie. Winn-Dixie is a talented dog who can understand people and smile with his teeth showing. Opal, Winn-Dixie’s owner, adopts him at the Winn-Dixie market. Opal is new in Florida, so she tries to make new friends. She meets Miss Franny, a librarian, Gloria Dump; an old lady that people think is a ghost, Amanda, a friend, Otis, a worker at a pet shop, and the Dewberry boys. Opal doesn’t really prefer them. Anyway, Opal plans a party and invites Amanda, her daddy, the Dewberry boys (Gloria Dump said she had to), Ms. Franny, Gloria Dump, and Otis. Well, everybody made it. Everyone was happy until it started to rain and thunder and lighting was approaching. Winn-Dixie has a pathological fear of thunderstorms, so that’s a problem. Everybody forgot about Winn-Dixie. Nobody could find him! Anyway, I would recommend this book for both boys and girls and it is a fast read. If you want to find out what happens to Winn-Dixie, read Because of Winn-Dixie.

Warriors-The Sight-Erin Hunter

I suggest that you read the other two Warriors series before reading this book. The Sight is about three cats. The three cats named Hollykit, Lionkit, and Jaykit are siblings. Jaykit is different from his sister and brother because he was born blind, but his other senses are excellent. There are five clans in the forest. They are the Windclan, Riverclan, Shadowclan, Thunderclan, and Starclan. Hollykit, Lionkit, and Jaykit are in the Thunderclan. In the beginning, Hollykit, Lionkit, and Jaykit are tired of waiting to be apprentices. They hear that there are baby foxes in the territory that may endanger their clan. The three cats sneak out to chase them away so they could be heroes. They tried to chase out the baby foxes, but they failed. In the process, Jaykit got hurt and they got in trouble with their leader. Eventually, they became apprentices and were given new names. Hollykit became Hollypaw, Jaykit became Jaypaw, and Lionkit was renamed Lionpaw. Hollypaw became a medicine cat apprentice, but is not sure if she can do it. Jaypaw gets a message from Spottedleaf, an ancestor. Will Hollypaw continue to be a medicine cat apprentice? What did Spottedleaf say to Jaypaw? You will have to read this book to find out. I think both boys and girls will like this book. When I started reading this book, I didn’t want to stop because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.

The River – Gary Paulsen

The story started when Brian Robeson was at his house when the door bell rang. A guy named Derek Holtzer was at the door and he said he wanted Brian to go in the wilderness with him and live there just like he did in the Canadian Woods so he could teach people how to survive if they ever fall in a bad situation. Brian’s mom agreed and Derek came back a few weeks later with a plane. When they took off and landed. While they were unpacking, Brian said to leave all of the equipment on the plane except Derek’s radio, a map, and his note book. After the plane left, Brian made a shelter and then it started to rain. A few days later they had a big lightning storm. Derek reached for his radio and a lightning bolt struck Derek and the radio the next morning Derek had his eyes a little bit opened and Brian knew that Derek was in a coma. Brian tried to get some water but Derek choked on the water. Brian thought that Derek might die without food or water. Brian looked on the map and saw a river that connects to a trading post one hundred miles away. He decided to build a raft to reach the trading post and finds out what trouble is ahead of him. Will he survive and how is he going to get Derek to the trading post? If you want to find out, read The River by Gary Paulson. I think this book is good for people that find Hatchet intrusting. If you haven’t read Hatchet read Hatchet before The River.

Julep O’ Toole; Miss Independent-Trudi Trueit

Julep O’ Toole is back in Miss Independent!! In this book Julep wants to pick out her own clothes, get a cell phone, and wear make-up, to bad this is to “grown up” for her mom. Juelp does not feel any better when she sees her sister wear make-up and pick out her own clothes. When she finally thinks that she is getting along with her mother disaster strikes and she will not even speak to her mom!! So when she gets an invitation to spend a week away from her mom she is happy. When she gets to her dream vacation spots she realizes that what she really wants is to get along with her mom.

I thought this book was very good. It is interesting how all the Juelp O’ Toole books tie to the first book Confessions of a Middle Child. I think that this is a good book for girls to read with their moms.

Pinky Pye – Eleanor Estes

Pinky Pye is the sequel to Ginger Pye so, if you haven’t read it yet, it’s still okay. Pinky Pye is about Rachel, Jerry, Pinky, Ginger, Gracie, Uncle Bennie, and Mr. and Mrs. Pye. Pinky and Gracie are cats, Ginger is a dog, and everybody else is people. It starts out with the Pyes going to Fire Island because Mr. Pye has to discover a bird there. Mr. Pye is an ornithologist which means somebody who studies birds. Their cabin was built by a lady and that lady told them that she forgot to close a window in the eaves. When they first got there, the doorbell rang and there was a black kitten that had a collar that said, “A abandoned.” They kept the kitten and named it Pinky because of its pink tongue. Later on, a big wind came and it was so big that the next day, the papers said a baby owl got blown away by it. The Pyes then herd a big thump in the eaves and knew it was the window they forgot to close, so they closed it. The next day, Uncle Bennie (three years old) wants a pet so he went out looking for grasshoppers. He finds one and puts it in the eaves so that the cats don’t get it but, the next morning they were gone and happened again and again. Meanwhile, Gracie is up on the roof staring at something in the eaves. What is in the eaves? You’ll have to read the book to find out. (I forgot to mention that Pinky is a typewriting cat) I think this book is good for both boys and girls. I highly recommend it for patient people because in the beginning, nothing really happens. However, in the end, it was very interesting. If you want to find out what is in the eaves, read Pinky Pye.

The Phantom Tollbooth- Norton Juster

This has got to be one of the best books I’ve ever read. It has adventure, brain hurting math, and wacko words! It starts out with a young boy named Milo. He never knows where to be. When he is doing one thing, he wants to do something else. When he’s inside, he wants to be outside. When he’s out, he wants to be in. One day he finds a toolbooth. He used the directions inside, and poof! He’s where he wanted to be. He meets a watchdog named Tock. He goes to two towns, Dictionopolis and Digitopolis. In Dictionopolis everything anyone thinks of is numbers, numbers, numbers! In Digitopolis, it’s the oposite. It’s all about numbers. These two kingdoms are ruled by brothers. They hate each other, and compete against each other. On the way to Digitopolis from Dictionopolis they jumped to conclusions. No, SERIOUSLY, they literally jumped to conclusions. There is a place called Conclusions. Whenever you decide something without proof or background knowlege, you get launched there imediately. The only way to get back, was to swim across the sea of knowlege. Nobody has ever been able to cross it. Are they ever going to get back? Will Digitopolis and Dictionopolis ever make peace with each other? Read the Phantom Tollbooth to find out. This book would be awsome for both genders because there is plenty of adventure, while there is also plenty of problem solving.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – by Jeff Kinney

This story is about a young boy named Greg. Greg always gets himself into some wacky situations. For example it was October and he and his friend ,Rowley, wants to build a haunted house. They worked on it on paper but, when it was time to build it they did not have the supplies or there parents would not allow them to do the haunted houes. So they just brought kids in there bed room and they made them go under the bed for $2.50. It was just Greg and Rowley under the bed scaring the little children. Example 2: On Halloween night there were teenagers that always jump out of the bushes when little kids are walking by and when they are there they jump out and scare them then, they take there candy. That night Greg and Rowley went to the bushes and they were teasing the teenagers. The teenagers got mad and they started to chase them but, they ran into Greg’s grandmothers house. There are WAY for situations that Grag gets himself into. If you want to know all of the situations that Greg gets himself into and how he gets out of them read this GREAT book Diary of the Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. This book is GREAT because of its humor. I really think it is like a diary well, not really its more like a book of what you did. The vocabulary is not hard at all. I really think you would like this book. Ginger Pye – Eleanor Estes

Have you been looking for that perfect book? Well, do I have one for you! It’s called Ginger Pye. It’s about a boy named Jerry, his sister, Rachel, their dog Ginger, and their three year old uncle, Uncle Bennie. They are on a hunt to find their dog. It started during Thanksgiving dinner when the Pye’s let Ginger out into the backyard. Once they finished dinner, they were going to let Ginger back in the house, but when Jerry went out, nobody was there. The only clue they had was a yellow hat they kept finding. They found the hat on their porch. They also found it when it blew into the lake when they were swimming. I think this book would be good for both boys and girls. If you like dogs, than I really recomend it. This book is realistic fiction because getting a dog stolen from you could happen in real life. Well there you go! A book you might be looking for. You may really like it!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-Roald Dahl

You’ve eaten the candy. You’ve seen the two movies, but have you read the book? In the book, (as you know) the main character Charlie Bucket is poor and lives with his four grandparents and his parents. He likes chocolate, but his family is too poor to afford it. Then when the greatest chocolate maker in the world, Willy Wonka, sends out 5 golden tickets in unknown chocolate bars. People go crazy for the golden ticket, because if you have a golden ticket, you get to go inside Wonka’s Chocolate factory. When Charlie gets the last golden ticket, he, his Grandpa Joe, and the 4 other children (with their parents) are about to enter an adventure in Wonka’s factory. This book is filled with excitement, and I think that you would probably laugh 7 times in one chapter. I would recommend this book to boys and girls. I think that the book is better than the two movies.

Double Fudge- Judy Blume

I just finished reading Double Fudge plus I thought it was an excellent story. It is about 2 boys, their sister Tootsie, and their mom and dad. This story starts when this family had a boy that was nicknamed Fudge and was 5 years old. He wanted to be a miser when he grew up and he also wanted to buy New York. This one-day they were sitting at the dinner table and one thing led to the next and then fudge asked his dad how much he would pay him if he passed the salt. One-day fudge started to make his own money called Fudge bucks. A couple days before their school started they went to the shoe store to get some shoes. Fudge wanted two pairs so he said he would pay for the second pair but that didn’t happen. Afterwards when they went home they saw Peter’s friend named Jimmy. He told peter he was going to move across town. After school started Fudge, Peter and their parents went to Washington to see how money was made. While they were there they met these people who were their long-lost cousins. Were they really? You will have to read the story to find out what happens next.

Superfudge- Judy Blume

This great story I just finished reading is called Superfudge. Well the story all starts when this boy named Peter finds out that his mom is having a baby and he thinks the baby will turn out like his brother Fudge. So then he goes to his room gets out a bag and starts to pack his stuff. Afterwards he goes down and is about to leave but has no where to go so he stays and eats dinner. So when Fudge is eating he asks what kind of baby it was going to be. Peter sure didn’t want it to turn out like Fudge. When Peter was done eating he grabed his bag and he said that he was leaving. Fudge grabbed his leg and told him not to go. So then he changed his mind again. After the baby was born…. You will have to read the book to find out what happens next. I would recommend this book to girls and boys.
