Shadows on the Sea – Joan Hiatt Harlow

Shadows on the Sea is a fictional story and most of the settings and events happened in real life, but all of this happened in 1944, not 1942. Well, at this time, World War II was taking place and the U.S. was fighting against Germany. Jill Winters is a fourteen-year-old-kind-of-famous teen and is now starting to worry about her parents because of the war. Jill’s father, Drew Winters, is a famous singer and he travels on planes, which was then targets to German planes, while Jill’s mother is traveling on the Caribou to the Newfoundlands (because her brother, Jill’s Uncle Cliff, was ill) which, at that time, was a target to German U-boats (Undersea Boats). In fact, any ships in the sea, that wasn’t German, was targeted and torpedoed. So during her summer, Jill travels to Maine to stay with her grandmother, Nana. Over there, she meets and makes two friends, Wendy Taylor and Quarry MacDonald. One day, Jill discovers a hurt, carrier pigeon with a message read: Sonnabend iv. Together, Quarry and Jill try to solve this mystery, yet there are many more secrets in the town of Winter Haven. There are so many rumors and mysteries in Winter Haven like how Wendy and her aunt, Adrie Dekker, look almost identical [like they were twins or daughter and mother or something...) and how Nana and her friend, Ida Wilmar, (plus many more) hold secret meetings every Sunday evenings. Jill's yearning desire of solving these mysteries take over, but as Jill discovers the answer to an exploding mystery, she ends up endangering herself, or maybe even risking her life... I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do, too. Though this is a good book, I would recommend ths book to mostly girls, since the point of view is from a girl's point of view, but rmainly because the sensitivity in Jill's heart made me feel like a real girl and not a tomboyish one. But, remember, this story is fictional, yet most of the events had really happened. Joan experienced basically the same things Jill went through, but she was younger when it happened. This story was written from Joan's own experience and her mom was nearly killed by the Germans. [Good thing she got off before the Germans attacked. So lucky!]

The Prophet of Yonwood – Jeanne DuPrau

The Prophet of Yonwood is the prequel of The City of Ember and The People of Sparks. During the month of July, two main things happened. The first was when Althea Tower, the prophet, had a vision of the future; There was going to be a war in Yonwood. The second thing that happened was Nicole [Nickie] Randolph’s visit to Yonwood. She had three goals that she hoped to accomplish there. Goal #1 was: To live in GreenHaven, her great grandfather’s house that her aunt, Crystal, was planning to sell. Goal #2 was: To fall in love or experience romance. Her third goal was to help the world somehow, no matter how hard or easy it is. So Nickie met Mrs. Beeson, a Yonwood citizen to wanted to stop the world by putting on endless, high-pitched beepers on people who did wrong things. Nickie decided to help her and look out for people who did wrong, but she ended up turning in people who where innocent. Mrs. Beeson did these things becaused she believed in God very much. Althea Tower became ill after the horrible vision of the future and lately she had been mumbling things such as, ” No sinnies” , ” No lights” or, ” No words”. Which led to to Mrs. Beeson believing she said ‘No sinners’, ‘No lights’ and ‘No curse words’. So whoever was a sinner, whoever turned on their lights, whoever said curse words, and whoever did other things the Prophet had said, Mrs. Beeson would stick a beeping bracelet on their wrists and that beeping would never stop until you stopped doing the wrong things. Nickie was involved in all of this until one day, Althea mumbled, “No dogs.” The first day Nickie visited GreenHaven, she met a dog, Otis, and she loved him a lot and when she heard this, she was frightened and furious. The day Mrs.Beeson took Otis away, she wanted to go home and never come back. Then, one afternoon, Nickie met the Prophet. She asked her so many questioned to why she said those things. Please read this to find the answers to Nicole’s questions and to find out how her goals were accomplished. I recommend this all children and I hope you learn that accomplishing a goal isn’t easy and it takes time. The middle of the book might be a little dry, but once you read a few more chapters, it’ll become interesting. And remember, this is the prequel to The City of Ember and to The People of Sparks. Enjoy!

The People of Sparks-Jeanne DuPrau

The People of Sparks is the sequel to The City of Ember and let me tell you about it. As from The City of Ember, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow found a world full of light and weird creatures, totally different from the city of Ember where there was no sun or creatures. They left a message in Ember telling them where they were and after a few days, everyone from Ember emerged from underground [Ember was a city underground] and they traveled on for days until they found a city, The city of Sparks. The people of Sparks were willing to let them stay in the city, but there was too much people and Sparks couldn’t possibly feed all of them. Plus, where would the Emberites eat and sleep? Finally, Sparks made a decision that the Emberites would stay for six months, in a hotel, and work for food so when they leave, they would know how to harvest crops and make a new city. But the Sparks and the Emberites aren’t eating enough and they’re working too hard. Then, the Sparks start attacking the Emberites and so they fight back until all of this leads to war. But Lina and Doon doesn’t like this; they don’t want this. They don’t want to ruin this beautiful city. So, is courage and strength enough for Lina and Doon to stop this war? Please read this book and I recommend this book to all children. I hope you’ll learn that violence isn’t the right answer, it’ll just lead to hatred and nothing will come out of it. Please Enjoy!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules by Jeff Kinney

This book is about a middle schooler that has wierd friends, annoying parents and a tough older brother. Greg, the main character, has a difficult life. He always get into wacky situations. For example, once he got stuck in the girl’s restroom at this grandfather’s condo. Another time Greg’s parents went out of town for one night and as soon as his parents left, Greg’s older brother, Rodrick, called all his friends and threw a huge party in the house. When the party begins, Rodrick throws Greg down in the basement so he won’t tell his parents. When the party ends, Rodrick lets him out and forces Greg to help clean up the mess. So Greg cleaned up the house with Rodrick all night. Also there was a time when Greg joined the swim team and Greg hated it. The pool was always cold. However Greg found a way to get around it: everytime the swim class started, Greg would ask his coach if he could go to the restroom and the coach would say yes. Then Greg would go to the restroom and stay there until the class was over. If you want to know all of the wacky, crazy situations Greg gets put into, read this FANTASTIC book, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules”. This book is great for elementary aged children. This book is also very popular and hilarious. This book does not have difficult vocabulary. I love this book and know you will too.

He plans on stealing the Amulet of Samarkand, a prized treasure Simon longs for, by summoning a djinn/demon, Bartimaeus. Eager-Helen Fox

This book is about the friendship between robots and humans. Gavin and Fleur Bell live in the 21st century where technocrats look down on people and where robots are slaves. One day, Grumps’ [the Bell families robot] timer is broken so Mr. Bell asks his friend, Professor Ogden, to help him find another robot to assist Grumps. EGR3 is a robot built by Professor. In this century, robots can’t feel any emotions, yet EGR3 (aka Eager) can. While Eager assists Grumps, LifeCorp [top company that invents robots] is building a new generation of robots called the BDC4s.These new robots are more unique than Eager. They take innocent people hostage and they party all day in hotels. Using his unique [yet useful] ways, can Eager stop their strange actions. And most of all, will Eager learn what living means? Reading this book will give all the answers. I would recommend this book to both boys and girls and I hope you enjoy it!
Take your time reading this book and please read it carefully because if you can understand this book it will be a fun and interesting book to read.

Firestar’s Quest-Erin Hunter

This book is a little strange because it belongs to no series. This book happens between the original Warriors series and the New Prophecy series. So if you haven’t read the first Warriors series do NOT read this book. Firestar, Thunderclan’s leader, finds out that there is a fifth clan from a dream. The clan’s name is Skyclan. In a dream from Starclan, Firestar learns that Skyclan was driven out of the forest by his ancestors. He also learns that the dreams were from Skyclan’s leader. Firestar finds out that he has to rebuild Skyclan. The next morning Firestar leaves with his mate Sandstorm to go find Skyclan. On the way they stay at a twolegplace. Twolegs are humans. In the morning the two cats have an argument, Sandstorm wants to stay at the twolegplace but, Firestar wants to go on. Sandstorm accuses Firestar of loving Skyclan more than her. So they separate. The next day Firestar realizes he misses Sandstorm and can’t go on without her, so he searches madly for her until he finds her in a twoleg garden. Then Firestar and Sandstorm go on and find some caves that they think that Skyclan used to live in. But Firestar suddenly finds out that he doesn’t have to bring them back together he has to rebuild the clan from only an old cat named Sky. I think this book is good for boys and girls. Firestar’s Quest is a pretty long book but is worth the read.

That includes hunting, scratching, taking ticks out, and tending to her wounds. Later during a battle with Shadowclan the kits of a clan queen were stolen, Spottedleaf the medicine cat was dead, and Yellowfang was gone! Will the clan find the kits? Who took them? And why is Yellowfang gone? If you want to find out you have to read this book, Warriors- Into the Wild by Erin Hunter.
