Chasing Redbird-Sharon Creech

This awesome book is about a girl who has to deal with a trail, a boy, her family, and the deaths of loved ones. The girl, Zinny (nickname for Zinnia), was four years old when she saw her cousin Rose die. Rose was born on the same year and month that Zinny was born on, so she died when she was four. Zinny blamed herself because she had the whooping cough and Rose got the whooping cough from Zinny and she died. Zinny’s parents had seven children and sometimes would have to ask what their names were. One day Zinny’s Aunt Jessie died. Once again Zinny thought it was her fault because she showed Aunt Jessie a snake. Aunt Jessie hates snakes and must have been very frightened. Uncle Nate starts acting weird when Aunt Jessie dies. Zinny was very close to Aunt Jessie and her Uncle Nate. One day Zinny finds a boy that used to go to her church, Jake Boone. She finds him at the store he moved away, but moved back. Jake used to be skinny and little, but know he was bigger. Jake starts giving Zinny presents. Zinny knows that something is wrong. First usually boys use Zinny to get May, her sister. Second once Jake gives a puppy to Zinny and Zinny finds out it was stolen! One day Zinny finds a trail and it is covered in weeds. She finds a map of the trail in the museum and finds it is twenty miles long. Zinny feels that she has to uncover the trail or something horrible would happen. When uncovering the trail she finds a medallion with the letters TNWM she feels she has seen it before, but can’t remember if she has. What does TNWM mean? Does Jake really like her? Did he steal the puppy? What will the trail lead her to? Did Aunt Jessie die from the snake? I think this book is a little more for girls than boys. There is so much I want to tell you, but I’m going to let you read the book instead. Hope you read it!

How to Steal a Dog

How to Steal a Dog is about a girl named Georgina. Her family lives in a car on a different street every night. The reason they live in a car is because her father, who made the money so their family could live a decent house, left them so they couldn’t pay the rent. so, one night Georgina looked out the window and saw a poster that said ” Lost Dog 15,000 Dollars”. Georgina thought about it and decided to look for that dog. The next day, Georgina saw that the sign was gone! So, she decided to steal a dog. She took out her notepad and wrote notes about How to Steal a Dog. This book made me feel thankful that I even had a home.

Twelve-Lauren Myracle

The book Twelve, by Lauren Myracle, is about a girl named Winnie and how her life (and her body) changes as she is growing up. In the beginning of the book Winnie is starting 7th grade with some of her friends from elementary school. Some exciting as well as not so good incidents happened in 7th grade. An example of a not so good incident was when Winnie had a substitute teacher and all her friends were being mean to the substitute teacher. They were mean because when the substitute called role none of said their correct names. The bad part was that a popular, snobby girl made Winnie play along too.  After that Winnie felt really bad.  An example of an exciting incident was that later in the school year Winnie and her friend Dinah met a new friend named Cinnamon.  Winnie was not always excited about the ways her body changed in 7th grade.  At the very end of the book Winnie had great friends, family, and a great boyfriend. I thought the author’s main purpose of the book was to tell readers that life can be hard at times and can be fun at times too. My favorite part of the book was when Winnie started 7th grade because it was her first year in middle school and it sounds like middle school can be really fun. I thought it was cool how the chapters of the book were named by months instead of numbers.  I would rate this book a 9 ½ out of 10 because a person’s life can be bumpy at times and exciting at other times. This book is a realistic fiction book. I LOVED this book and hope you LOVE the book too.

Seven Daughters and Seven Sons – Barbara Cohen & Bahija Lovejoy

Seven Daughters and Seven Sons is an Arabic tale about a young woman who disguises herself as a man to earn fortune and keep her family alive.

The young woman, Buran, is part of a family including seven daughters, a father, and a mother. The family is excruciatingly poor because of its lack of men. In this time period, only men could run businesses and earn money. Because of that, Buran’s father has to support all nine of them on his own while his wife took care of the house and their children.

On the other hand, Buran’s uncle, her father’s brother, has seven sons. The family is overwhelmingly rich because of the eight men and their businesses around the country.

Buran has always dreamed of being in business. She was the only one out of ALL her sisters who was interested and willing to learn from their father. Buran’s father saw her willingness and taught Buran things only men were to know. Things such as, reading, writing, and playing chess. She embraced everything she was taught and one day she hoped all of it would be at use to her family and their terrible fortune. When Buran knew that her parents were losing money, she begged of the idea to be in business and dressing up as a man. Her parents automatically denied her request even though they knew it would really help the family. Buran’s father keeps losing money and slowly his business gets taken away.

Despite all of of this, her father gets a horrendous fever on an unfaithful day. He definitely can’t support his family now that his business is gone. After a long thought her father finally agrees to let Buran find business. She is glad that her father trusts her but, she is also serious about making the money needed to support the whole family. Her mom and dad has money saved for emergencies such as this one. Buran’s parents risk giving all the saved money to Buran. She buys men’s clothing and things needed for her trip on a cavern with other men.

She travels for days untill she finally reaches the city. When Buran reaches the city, she sustains her disguise as a man. Her name as a man in the new city is Nasir. She also creates a successful business selling and trading. The city’s prince, Mahmud, visits Buran’s shop pretty often. After they mingle and get to know each other, they become best friends. Buran soon discovers her love for Mahmud but, she knows that Mahmud thinks of her as a man knowned as Nasir. But, if she tells Mahmud she is a woman, she is afraid that all her business will be gone. But, most importantly she’s afraid that the friendship between Mahmud and Buran will disappear.

The Daring Book For Girls

The Daring Book For Girls by Andrea J. Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz is an amazing book that teaches a girl how to do a lot of things like playing basketball, doing a cartwheel, how to make a cootie catcher, etc. Even though I read this book I didn’t really understand how to do a cartwheel. Some things from this book I already knew like: how to make a cootie catcher or some Greek roots. One thing that this book taught me was how to tie a sari. This book taught me a lot more than I thought it would.

I would recommend this book to ONLY girls. (from the title) Enjoy!!!

The Ghost, The White House, And Me – Judith St.George

The story that  I read is “The Ghost, The White House, And Me”, by Judith St. George. This story is about two sisters named Katherine and Annie Granger. They both live in the White House because their mother is president. One of Katherine and Annie’s friends named Borden is so smart that he acts like he knows more about the White House than they do. Borden creeps out the girls by telling them a story of something scary that once happened to him at the White House. One night, he was invited to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom and suddenly he heard a knocking at the door. He looked at a mirror in the bedroom and saw the face of Abraham Lincoln. Since Katherine was writing a mystery, she thought it would be a good idea to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom also. When Katherine and Annie ask their mother, their Uncle Matt finds out what they want to do and he wants to do the same thing. Mrs.Granger thinks that Uncle Matt should sleep in the Lincoln bedroom since he is a mature adult. Katherine and Annie are angry at Uncle Matt so they try to pull a prank on him so Uncle Matt will think he is being visited by Abraham Lincoln. Katherine and Annie end up pulling a prank on another person named Senor Alvarez so Katherine and Annie get grounded. Annie and Katherine have not complained once while they are being punished so there mother lets them stay in the Lincoln bedroom. Suddenly, while the two girls are in bed, they hear a knock at the door. To find out what happens next read The Ghost, The White House, And Me by Judith St.George.

The Doll People-Ann M Martin

The Doll People, by Ann M. Martin, is about the Doll family and their secret: They are alive. The Doll family is made up of seven members: Mama Doll, Papa Doll, Uncle Doll, Annabelle Doll, Bobby Doll, and Nanny. There were once eight members, when Auntie Sarah was there. But one tragic day, she disappeared. Now Annabelle is trying to locate her, along with her friend Tiffany. Together, they for SELMP. (Society of the Exploration and Location of Missing Persons.) With the help of Tiffany, Uncle Doll, and Auntie Sarah’s journal, SELMP might find Auntie Sarah. There is only one glitch. No one in the human world knows that dolls are alive. When Annabelle was first made, she had to take the Doll Code Of Honor, which was an oath that living dolls had to live by. If a human saw them moving, or thought they saw them moving, the dolls were put in Doll State. Or if they did something that really endangered the doll’s secret life, then they could wind up in Permanent Doll State, in which they became an ordinary doll forever. Does Annabelle find Auntie Sarah? Can she protect the secret life of dolls? To find out, read The Doll People.

I recommend this book for girls, because it is mostly about a girl. There is some boys, so boys may like it too.
